Styrofoam – or expanded Polystyrene is an ecological disaster! It fills our landfills. It pollutes our water and our soil! Styrofoam is bad stuff yet there are tons and tons of produced and thrown away weekly!
Chad Currin, owner of BioSoil Farms has invented a small DIY Styrofoam Recycling Kit called StyroFarm! It harnesses the amazing power of mealworms to eat the styrofoam which gets rendered harmless and organic in the mealworm’s gut. These amazing little creatures, the larvae of the flightless Darkling Beetle, can live on a styrofoam only diet – no additional food or water source needed. They consume Styrofoam and what they excrete is harmless and safe to dispose of – plus it reduces the volume of the waste by about 95%! WOW!

Three things we should all be doing to reduce the effects of Styrofoam Waste:
- Refuse Styrofoam and don’t use it. Don’t accept Styrofoam to-go containers or cups that after one use will clog our landfills and pollute our water and soil for millions of years!
- Reuse Styrofoam – Packing peanuts especially can be used over and over again. Shipping and mailing centers like those owned and operated by FedEx and UPS will gratefully accept your packing peanuts made from Styrofoam to reuse over and over again.
- Recycle Styrofoam – Until just a few days ago, recycling Styrofoam was impossible. But not any more. With BioSoil Farm‘s StyroFarm you can recycle Styrofoam at home, in the office or recycle Styrofoam at school!
