The Styrofoam Recycler’s Guide!
Thanks for purchasing STYRO-FARM! With this STYRO-FARM you can have some fun while helping the Earth!
Mealworms are very cool. Most people have always thought of mealworms as a nuisance. They have long infested grain storage and food sources. Until scientists discovered that these amazing bugs (they aren’t really worms at all) we know as “mealworms” have amazing almost magical powers. They can eat and digest plastic turning it into an organic material.
MANY PEOPLE AND PETS LOVE TO EAT MEALWORMS. WHILE WE BELIEVE THAT THESE MEALWORMS SAFELY DIGEST THE POLYSTYRENE (STYROFOAM) NO TESTS HAVE BEEN DONE ON THE HEALTH RISKS OF PEOPLE OR PETS EATING MEALWORMS FED STYROFOAM.
While Allergies to mealworms are rare – it is always best to be safe not sorry. Most allergies seem to come from handling or eating mealworms that eat grains to which people are allergic and so our Styrofoam eating mealworms should be safer but wear gloves or do not directly touch the mealworms if you are at a high risk. See the chart provided by Livin Farms who sells mealworms for food.
SETTING UP YOUR STYRO-FARM:
Step 1 – place crumbled up styrofoam in the mealworm housing unit.
Step 2 – Add Mealworms to special mealworm work and housing unit.
Step 3 – Place on lid & WATCH & ENJOY!
NO FOOD OR WATER SHOULD BE ADDED

One of the great things about the mealworm Styro-Farm is that there is very little care, if any, that is needed.
LIGHTS: Mealworms are more active in the dark so they will be fine left without light for days on end. They don’t “mind light” but they will be less active. After 30 days measure to see which group has eaten more.
TEMPERATURE: Mealworms “speed up” when it get’s warmer. Their life cycle condenses and they eat more. Try a 30 day experiment with one habitat in 70 degrees and one in 80 degrees. Look for the changes in quantity, life cycle and amount eaten over 30 days.
STYROFOAM vs OAT BRAN: Place 100 mealworms in one habitat with STYROFOAM and 100 mealworms in the habitat with oat bran and either and orange slice and apple slice or a potato slice. At the End of 30 days measure the amount eaten (starting weight vs ending weight), number of mealworms, total weight of mealworms, etc.
About once a year you may need to empty the “frass” out of the bottom. It is the sandy substance at the bottom of the container.
